How to Install Spoonflower Wallpaper and Decals

Wallpaper Installation Instructions:

Note: Installing wallpaper is a two-person job! Review the instructions and plan carefully before you start.

  1. Preparation: Make sure your wall is clean and free of dust before you start. Patch any damaged areas of the wall, especially where sharp edges might pierce or tear the wallpaper. Lay down a dropcloth to protect the floor from dripping water. Gather your supplies: painter’s tape, a sponge, wallpaper trough/tub or roller, and a sharp utility knife.
  2. Trimming: At the bottom of the roll, you will see an extra two inches of wallpaper and a small amount of white space. Leave the trimming until the end of the application process, until after the wallpaper has dried. Do NOT trim the wallpaper before application.
  3. Wetting: Apply water on back of each roll/panel with a roller or submerge each roll/panel in a wallpaper trough or bathtub to activate the adhesive.
  4. Booking: “Book” the wallpaper by folding the pasted side in on itself. See figure a.
    a) Fold the bottom end to about one-half or two-thirds of the way up the paper. Avoid creasing the paper.
    b) Fold the top down to just meet that point.
    c) With the pasted sides together, fold the strip in half or roll it up loosely and set it aside to relax for 3 to 5 minutes. Do not allow it to dry completely before applying.
  5. Application:
    a) Unfold just the top half of your “booked” paper to begin applying your first strip on the far left side of the wall. You must apply the wallpaper left to right. See figure b. (Leaving the lower part folded will make it much easier to handle.) You can use painter’s tape to secure the wet wallpaper to the wall with the top edge aligned to the edge of the ceiling.
    b) Once positioned correctly, unfold the balance of the roll/panel and smooth downward and outward on the surface with a broad smoothing brush or damp sponge. Small bubbles will dissipate on their own as the surface dries.
    c) Apply the second strip of wallpaper to the wall, carefully lining up the repeating design so that it seamlessly matches the first strip. The wallpaper is printed with 3/4 inch of overlap, but careful visual matching is still very important during this step. The overlap is provided to aid matching and create a seamless appearance. Do not trim the paper along the overlapped edge. See figure c.
  6. Repeat: Repeat steps for each strip of wallpaper, visually lining up the repeating pattern on each new strip with the pattern on the previously applied section. Use painter’s tape to secure each new strip if necessary, and be sure to align the design carefully while the wallpaper is still wet.
  7. Finish Up: When dry, trim excess paper at the bottom of each strip with a sharp utility knife. Drying time is about 3 hours.

REMOVAL: Start at the top of the wallpaper and carefully separate a full width strip about 8 inches down from the top away from the wall. If  you are unable to separate the paper from the wall, apply water with a damp sponge to moisten the paper surface. With both hands, slowly pull the paper at a downward angle. Any remaining adhesive can be removed with a damp sponge. The paper can be recycled after removal.

Wall Decal Installation Instructions:

  1. Surface: Use a warm, damp cloth or sponge to clean the surface you’re planning to cover, then allow it to dry completely before applying your decal.
  2. Peeling: If the edge of your decal is difficult to grasp, use a utility knife or other very thin blade to gently separate the edge of the decal from the backing until you can take hold of it and peel with your fingers.
  3. Sticking: Start at the top of the decal and pull down two or three inches of the backing. Lightly press and smooth the exposed adhesive surface to your wall from the top down, smoothing as you go along. Work your way down in two to three inch sections. If you have a helper, have them hold the bottom of the decal and pull gently to provide tension that will help you keep the decal straight.
  4. Smoothing: If you have bubbles or wrinkles, press gently with provided squeegee to smooth them out, or peel back the affected area and reapply.
  5. Repositioning: Your Spoonflower decal can be removed and repositioned, but keep in mind that it will lose its sticking ability if you reposition it frequently.
